By three o’clock, the Porter’s car had been towed to the storage lot. I found the officer who had filed the report.

“Any idea what caused the accident?” I asked.

“Looks like brake failure.”

“Did anything about the brakes look suspicious?”

“You mean like was the brake line cut? Nope. That was the first thing they checked. The line did have a worn spot, but it looks like a rupture all the way.”

“So, there’s no way the brakes could have been tampered with?”

“I guess you could never rule that out, but if someone did, they were damn good. Why all the questions? Is there something we should be looking at?”

“I guess not. It’s just that the Porter’s were on their way to see Maggie to buy a house. I told her I’d check.”

“That’s rough,” he said. “Sorry to hear it.”
